Noise Reduction for Long Exposure Shooting
The E-1 provides the professional with all the tools needed to
get the best image quality every time, including Noise Reduction
and Noise Filter.
Shooting at long exposures over 2 seconds, or high ISO speeds,
can often show "Fixed Pattern Noise". The Noise Reduction
feature lets the user cancel this phenomenon using a black frame
exposure subtraction process.
Immediately following the capture of the original exposure, a black
frame exposure is taken for the same exposure time, doubling the
exposure time. The first image is then compared to the black frame
to cancel any Fixed Pattern Noise that may be present in the original
photograph.
Random Pattern Noise is often found in images with large solid
colour areas like sky, coloured walls or skin tones of a picture.
Random Pattern Noise is minimised with the Noise Filter mode of
the E-1. By reviewing an image part by part, Noise Filter actively
adjusts the phenomenon so it's less apparent while adding only
a slight increase to the image processing time.
